Skin tone
A fursona is an animal character that represents you in the furry community. It is part self-portrait and part invention: the species says something about you, and the colors are whatever you love.
One limit to know before you start. This maker draws a human-shaped face with animal ears, a tail, whiskers and fangs. It does not draw muzzles or full animal heads. It works well for planning species and colors, and for an animal-eared version of your fursona.
Choosing a species
People usually pick an animal they feel close to, not the one that sounds most impressive.
- Fox, wolf, dog: Fox ears and Fox tail. The most common fursonas, with good reason.
- Cat and big cats: Cat ears, Cat tail and Sharp eyes.
- Rabbit: Bunny ears and Bunny tail.
- Bear: Bear ears and a sturdy look.
- Hybrids: mix ears from one species with the tail of another.
Colors and markings
Limit the palette to three or four colors: a main fur color, a secondary color, an accent and an eye color. Natural palettes use browns, greys and creams. Bright palettes are equally welcome, such as purple fur with teal accents. Set the fur with the Hair color, and match the skin tone to it if you want the whole character in fur colors. Whiskers adds an animal nose.
Making a reference sheet
Artists who draw your fursona need a reference. That is a usable first reference sheet, and you can replace it with commissioned art later.
