Anime PFPs fall into a few moods. Each one has a recipe.

Backgrounds with atmosphere

A Gradient background does a lot for an anime portrait. Dark red fading to black feels dramatic. Pale blue fading to white feels calm. Stars on navy suits night-time characters, and a Solid color gives the clean icon look. Match the background to the eye color for a picture that feels deliberate.

Original is safer too
